How to Check if Your iPad is Network Locked

If you're buying a second-hand iPad or switching mobile carriers, knowing whether your iPad is network locked is an important first step. A locked iPad is tied to a specific carrier and won't work with other SIM cards until it's officially unlocked.

Here's how to check.

Method 1: Check via iPad Settings

This is the quickest method if you have access to the device.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap About
  4. Scroll down to Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock

If it reads No SIM restrictions, your iPad is unlocked. If it shows a specific carrier name, the device is locked to that network.

Note: This option only appears on cellular iPad models. Wi-Fi only iPads do not support SIM cards and are not network locked.

Method 2: Check via Apple's Coverage Checker

You can verify lock status using your iPad's serial number without needing a SIM card.

  1. Go to Settings > General > About and note your Serial Number
  2. Visit checkcoverage.apple.com
  3. Enter your serial number and complete the verification
  4. Review the results for SIM lock status

Method 3: Test with a Different SIM

The most definitive method is inserting a SIM card from a different carrier.

  1. Insert a SIM from a network different to the one the iPad was purchased on
  2. Power on the device
  3. If it connects and shows signal, the iPad is unlocked
  4. If it displays Invalid SIM or SIM Not Supported, it is locked

What to Do if Your iPad is Locked

Contact the original carrier directly to request an unlock. Most carriers will unlock a device provided it is fully paid off and not reported lost or stolen. Unlocking is typically free and processed within a few business days.
