If you’re using a MacBook running macOS, the built-in screenshot tools are powerful and simple to use.
To capture everything visible on your screen:
Command (⌘) + Shift + 3
Your MacBook will instantly take a screenshot and save it to your desktop by default.
This works on all modern MacBook models, including MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
Sometimes you don’t need the whole screen—just a specific area.
Command (⌘) + Shift + 4
Your cursor will turn into a crosshair.
Click and drag to select the area you want to capture
Release your mouse or trackpad
The screenshot will automatically save
This is one of the most commonly used MacBook screenshot shortcuts.
Want to capture just one window?
Command (⌘) + Shift + 4, then press the Spacebar
Your cursor will turn into a camera icon.
Hover over the window you want to capture
Click it
The screenshot saves automatically
This method adds a subtle shadow around the window for a polished look.
For more options, macOS includes a built-in screenshot panel.
Command (⌘) + Shift + 5
This opens the Screenshot toolbar, where you can:
Capture the entire screen
Capture a selected window
Capture a custom portion
Record your screen (video)
Choose where screenshots are saved
Set a timer
This is the most versatile way to take screenshots on a MacBook.
By default, screenshots are saved to your Desktop.
The file name usually looks like:
Screen Shot [date] at [time].png
You can change the save location:
Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5
Click Options
Choose a new save location (Documents, Clipboard, etc.)
If you want to paste a screenshot directly into an email or document:
Command (⌘) + Shift + Control + 3 (full screen)
or
Command (⌘) + Shift + Control + 4 (selected area)
This copies the screenshot to your clipboard instead of saving it as a file.
Then simply paste using Command (⌘) + V.
After taking a screenshot, a small thumbnail appears in the bottom-right corner of your screen.
Click it to:
Crop the image
Add text
Highlight areas
Draw annotations
Sign documents
You can also open screenshots in Preview for additional editing tools.
You can also take screenshots using Finder:
Open Launchpad
Search for “Screenshot”
Open the Screenshot app
This opens the same toolbar as Command + Shift + 5.
If your screenshot shortcuts aren’t working:
Check keyboard settings in System Settings
Make sure shortcut keys are enabled
Restart your MacBook
Update macOS
In rare cases, third-party apps may override shortcuts.
Learning how to screenshot on a MacBook saves time and boosts productivity. Whether you're capturing your full screen, selecting a specific area, or recording your screen, macOS makes the process seamless.
Here’s a quick recap:
Command + Shift + 3 → Full screen
Command + Shift + 4 → Selected area

Now you can confidently take screenshots on your MacBook like a pro.
