If you’ve ever wanted to record something happening on your iPhone screen - whether it’s a funny video, a gameplay moment, a tutorial, or a bug you want to show someone - good news: Apple makes it really easy.
Screen recording is built right into your iPhone. No extra apps needed.
Here’s exactly how to screen record on iPhone, including how to record with sound and where to find your video afterward.
If you’ve never used screen recording before, you might need to add it to your Control Centre.
Open Settings
Tap Control Centre
Scroll down and find Screen Recording
Tap the green + button next to it
That’s it. Now the screen recording button will show up in your Control Centre.
You only have to do this once.
Once it’s enabled, recording your screen takes just a few seconds.
If your iPhone has Face ID: swipe down from the top-right corner.
If your iPhone has a Home button: swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
Look for the circle icon with a dot in the middle. Tap it.
You’ll see a quick 3-second countdown, and then your phone will start recording everything on your screen.
When you’re done:
Tap the red indicator at the top of your screen and choose Stop, or
Open Control Centre again and tap the screen record button.
Your video saves automatically to the Photos app.
No extra steps needed.
This is where a lot of people get confused.
By default, your iPhone might not record your voice. If you’re making a tutorial or explaining something, you’ll want the microphone on.
Here’s how:
Open Control Centre
Press and hold the Screen Recording button (don’t just tap it)
Tap the Microphone icon so it turns red
Tap Start Recording
Now your screen and your voice will both be recorded.
This is perfect for:
App tutorials
Explaining settings
Recording gameplay with commentary
Walking someone through a problem
Every screen recording is automatically saved to your Photos app.
To find it:
Open Photos
Tap Albums
Scroll down to Screen Recordings
From there, you can edit it, trim it, send it to someone, or upload it to social media.
Most recordings start or end with a few awkward seconds of swiping. Luckily, it’s easy to fix.
Open the video in Photos
Tap Edit
Drag the sliders at the bottom to trim the beginning or end
Tap Done
You can either overwrite the original or save it as a new clip.
If you want to add music, text, or more advanced edits, apps like iMovie work great.
Once you start using it, you’ll probably use it more than you expect.
It’s great for:
Showing someone how to change a setting
Saving parts of live streams (when allowed)
Recording bugs to send to support
Capturing social media moments
Making quick tutorials
Saving video calls (if legally permitted)
And since it’s built into iOS, it works smoothly.
Go to Settings > Control Centre and make sure it’s added.
Press and hold the screen recording button and turn on the Microphone.
This usually happens because:
You’re low on storage
Your battery is low
The app blocks recording
Some apps (like Netflix or banking apps) block screen recording for privacy and copyright reasons. There’s no workaround for this.
When you’re recording, you’ll see a red indicator at the top of your screen. That’s normal.
Apple includes it for privacy reasons, and it can’t be permanently removed.
Can all iPhones screen record?
Yes, as long as your iPhone is running iOS 11 or later (which most modern iPhones do).
Can you screen record phone calls?
No, iPhones don’t allow built-in call recording because of privacy laws.
Is there a time limit?
There’s no set limit. It depends on your storage and battery life.
If you’ve been wondering how to screen record on iPhone, it’s honestly one of the easiest features to use once you know where it is.
Just:
Add it to Control Center
Tap record
Turn on the microphone if needed
Stop when you’re done
That’s it.
It’s simple, built-in, and surprisingly useful.
