Membrane vs. mechanical keyboards for gaming – is there a difference?

2024-07-04

From price point to performance, durability and even noise, there are many factors to consider when choosing between a membrane and mechanical keyboard.

Where gaming is concerned, enthusiasts like to have the best hardware to hand to make the most out of each session. With a rise in popularity of membrane keyboards, it may be tempting to gravitate towards the latest technology, but it’s important to note that mechanical keyboards are proving to remain popular with PC enthusiasts too. At Hex, we stock a number of both mechanical and membrane keyboards, both of which offer plenty to gamers. But do you know the difference between the two?

Mechanical switch keyboards

Familiar to almost all computer users, mechanical keyboards make that traditional “clicking” sound we all associate with keys being pressed. This is because there is an individual switch underneath each key that lets the computer know when it has been hit. These keys push through one of three membranes found underneath the keys that transmit signals to the computer. The keystrokes are louder with a mechanical keyboard, which is great for touch typists or gamers that want to keep eyes on the screen at all times. With even a soft press on the key, the sound will signal that it’s been hit. Considered to be both durable and long lasting, the mechanical keyboard is a firm favourite among gamers.

Membrane switch keyboards

Unlike a mechanical design, a membrane switch keyboard does not have individual moving parts for keys. There are instead pressure pads or keys that are layered across a single membrane spanning the length of the keyboard. Mac computers, for example, have membrane keyboards. Less sound emanates from each keystroke, and the keys can often feel “spongy” or softer to the touch. Whether or not this helps your gaming largely depends on your personal preference – and of course, your skill!
