NZXT Kraken Elite - Great AIO... But look out for this...

NZXT Kraken Elite 360mm – A Great AIO… With One Thing to Watch Out For

I wanted to share a quick experience I’ve now had twice with the NZXT Kraken Elite 360mm AIO, mainly to spread awareness rather than to bash the product, because when it works, it works really well.

About a year ago, I built my own PC using the Kraken Elite 360mm. Straight out of the box, I was hit with a loud grinding/ticking noise from the pump, CPU temps shooting straight to thermal throttling, and what seemed like zero water circulation. I’ve built systems with plenty of AIOs over the years and had never experienced anything like it. Naturally, I assumed it was faulty and was already mentally preparing to send it back.

Then, just recently, I built another PC - same AIO, brand new - and the exact same thing happened.

At that point, I knew something else had to be going on.

The Fix (That Saved Me Two RMAs)

What ended up fixing it was surprisingly simple:

The idea is to let any trapped air move its way out of the pump. It didn’t work instantly for me - I had to repeat the process a few times - but eventually, the grinding noise stopped completely. Once it did, everything went back to normal.

Real Results

This time around, the CPU was a Ryzen 9 7950X, a chip that’s famously hot. When the pump was misbehaving, it was instantly slamming into 95°C and throttling hard. After clearing the airlock and running a stress test, temps settled at around 75°C, even under load. No noise, no throttling, no issues.

The first time this happened last year, I genuinely thought the cooler was defective. Turns out, it was just an airlock - but one that can be pretty alarming if you’re not expecting it.

Final Thoughts

I don’t know if this happens with every Kraken Elite, but it’s now happened to me with two brand-new units, on completely separate builds. Once sorted, the Kraken Elite is a beautiful piece of hardware and performs exactly as you’d expect from a premium AIO.

This post isn’t here to scare anyone off - just to let you know that if your Kraken sounds awful and your temps look terrifying on first boot, don’t panic just yet. A little patience (and a bit of tilting) might save you a lot of stress.

Hopefully this helps someone else avoid the same “oh no, it’s dead” moment I had twice.
